 Swedish saxophone maestro Jonas Knutsson has along all his other musical projects in jazz and world music studied swedish folk music since the eighties from many different sources, old fiddlers and other musicians as well as from notations and old recordings. On july first 2010 he recorded 31 melodies of traditional swedish folk music from different parts of Sweden on solo saxophone. Here is his unique and fabulous album!

(Swedish folk music on solo saxophone)

Playing these tunes on the saxophone entails certain challenges. As a saxophonist playing this music, you can end up feeling like a trespasser in the fiddle player’s territory. Especially while playing traditional songs from Orsa and Bingsjö. This is why it has been particularly exciting on this occasion, to instead create a recording centred on the saxophone’s perspective when it comes to tone, dynamics and key choice. However, as I have learned most of these songs from fiddle players, it is impossible to avoid the influ- ence of their techniques on my own interpretations.

The musical phrases are most often created for the fiddle, which means there are very few places to breathe. Dynamically speaking, the saxophone is also a much louder instrument than the fiddle. This is why I have tried especially hard to find a way to play softly but with a pure tone and energy that balances well against the tone of the other instruments, including the fiddle and the nyckelharpa.

I was a member of jazz pianist and composer Elise Einarsdotter’s ensemble for many years. In the late 1980’s, the group expanded from a quartet to a quintet with the addition of singer and fiddle player, Lena Willemark. She brought with her traditional music from Älvdalen, which was added to the group’s repertoire. It was then that I learned to play my first fiddle tunes on the saxophone and I was immediately captured by the ingenious melodies. For me, this became the starting point of an adventurous journey through traditional Swedish music. Alongside other projects over the past 20 years, I have played, transcribed and dissected these special songs in an attempt to better understand the complexity and stories within them.

I have learned this music from my fellow colleagues in different bands and projects as well as other folk musicians I have met or listened to, my students and old recordings and transcriptions, which has led to the quite diverse selection of tunes. On this record- ing, I have simply chosen some of my favourites. Everything was recorded on the first of July 2010 at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm, with legendary sound engineer, Janne Hansson.

Chansons à souffler
(Musique folk suédoise sur le saxophone solo)

Jouer ces chansons avec un saxophone entraîne une série de défis. Comme saxophoniste, on sent souvent que l’on se trouve, dans cette musique, sur le territoire des violons. Pas moins lorsque l’on se lance dans des morceaux provenant, par exemple, d’Orsa ou de Bingsjö. C’est pourquoi ce fut passionnant lors de cet enregistrement de partir des saxophones en ce qui concerne le son, la dynamique et les tonalités. L’interprétation est pourtant inévitablement marquée par la « touche violoneuse » puisque j’ai appris la plupart des chansons des violonistes. Les phrases sont souvent conçues pour le violon, ce qui implique qu’il y a peu d’endroit pour respirer. Sur un plan simplement dynamique, le saxophone est un instrument au volume considérablement plus puissant que, par exemple, le violon. C’est pourquoi j’ai essayé de trouver une façon de souffler avec douceur et néanmoins avec du son et de l’énergie quand je joue, par exemple, avec un violon ou un violon à clés, pour équilibrer les timbres.

Pendant longtemps, j’ai été membre de l’ensemble de la pianiste et compositrice Elise Einarsdotter. A la fin des années ’80, le quartet s’est transformé en quintet avec l’arrivée de la chanteuse et violoniste Lena Willemark. Elle apporta au répertoire du groupe de la musique traditionnelle d’Älvdalen. J’ai ainsi eu l’occa- sion d’apprendre mes premiers morceaux pour violon, de capter ces mélodies difficiles, puissantes et lumineu- ses. Pour moi, ce fut le signal de départ d’un voyage de découverte parmi les chants suédois. Parallèlement à d’autres projets durant ces vingt dernières années, j’ai donc essayé d’apprendre de nouvelles chansons, de les transcrire et de découvrir ce qui se trouve en elles. Je suis toujours fasciné par ce que ces mélodies à une voix peuvent contenir de musique, de complexité, de récits.

Mes professeurs dans cette musique tradition- nelle ont été des collègues dans divers orchestres et projets, mais aussi des violonistes que j’ai rencontrés ou écoutés, mes étudiants, de vieux enregistrements et d’autres découvertes. Le répertoire est donc relati- vement disparate. Dans cet enregistrement, j’ai choisi quelques-unes de mes chansons préférées. Tout a été enregistré en un seul jour du mois de juin au studio Atlantis à Stockholm, sous la houlette du légendaire preneur de son Janne Hansson.
