After four months of rehearsals we premiered “The Bible” (yes, the whole one) at Göteborgs Stadsteater on february 17. After 30 performances lasting four and a half hours we play the last one tonight on may 10, 2012. It has been a good time.

Niklas Rådström took on the task to dramatize the whole Bible and it was performed by the big ensemble at Göteborgs Stadsteater directed by Stefan Metz. The music was played by The Three Wise Men (a subsidiary of Beches Brew), Göran Klinghagen (S.I.A.), Stefan Bellnäs (S.I.A.) and Bengt Berger.

This is a truly nostalgic tabla solo. Pandit Ravi Bellare begins with taking you through a traditional Farukhabad Peshkar as it must have been performed decades ago. Ravi explains and plays the intricate details of the Peshkar, showing us the poetic nature behind it. After the elaborate exploration of the peshkar Ravi plays a variety of composition types, Kaidas, Relas, Gats, Parans, Chakradhars and many authentic Farukhabad compositions as well as rare Kudow Singh Gharana Gats only to be heard from a true master like Ravi. He captivates the listener with each composition and you can constantly hear the audience’s excitement as the sum, the climax of the composition is reached. His mastery of Padant (recitation) is also phenomenal and precise. Many rare compositions are recited and then played in this recording and can be heard with great clarity.

Ravi proves to the audience that even after having been away from practice for more than twenty years, his hands and memory are in full form. To the layman this recording will be a treat to listen to, for the aspiring student it will be a life long pursuit to master the art and play it the way Ravi Bellare plays it in this incredible intimate solo recital.

This recording from the Puniyatithi (memorial concert) for ustad Shamsuddin Khan in 1968 is going to be one of the finest authentic and rare tabla jugalbandis (duets) you will ever hear. Shashi & Ravi were the first to introduce tabla Jugalbandi and Sawal Jawab (question and answer between the two artists). from a very young age in the early 1940’s they became two of the most sought after players of their time

Apart from being a celebration of their great grand guru, the occasion was further enhanced by the fact that the twins had not played together for several years, so there were many tabla players in the audience. Their duets were always regarded as the finest and the twins admired by great masters like Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa & Ustad Shamsuddin Khan. in this crystal clear recording you will hear rare compositions from the Farukhabad, Delhi, Ajrada and Banaras gharanas (various tabla traditions) played extemporaneously. Their guru Pandit Taranath Rao referred to Ravi & Shashi as the Ajanta & Ellora caves. he said that their knowledge of the art of playing tabla was so deep that the comparison was most fitting for the twins. Every time you hear this recording it will seem like the first.

When the recordings that we release were done the twins had not played together for several years so their appearance in Bombay at the Punyathiti for their grand Guru Shamsuddin Khan were eagerly anticipated by many, especially tabla players.

A few days after the duet, Ravibhai accompanied the great khyal singer Arolkar in a private concert and on this occasion he played a faboulous tabla solo where he also demonstrated the art of peshkar in a fascinating way. This recording is released in digital-only format.

They made fanciful, unpredictable, uniquely personal music that transgressed all genre boundaries. ISKRA’s music was built on collective improvisation, and the arsenal of instruments used was limitless.

Apart from giving regular concerts, ISKRA also produced workshops for children and adults. The group gave many performances for radio and TV, and released four LP albums and one CD.

In the autumn of 2003 original ISKRA members Jörgen Adolfsson, Tuomo Haapala, Sune Spångberg and Arvid Uggla reunited at Café Aguéli in Stockholm for a spontaneous casual concert. The music was recorded and is now released on this Country & Eastern CD.

Percussionist and composer Per Tjernberg has been active on the Swedish music scene since the mid-seventies when he started the group Archimedes Badkar, of now- declared cult status. He has brought his huge collection of instruments and knowledge of music from all over the world to numerous groups in the fields of jazz, free improvisation, rock, reggae, latin, afro and R&B, and collaborated with artists such as Dr John, Don Cherry and painter Mati Klarwein with whom he made the music & spoken word-album “No Man´s Land” (1997) that Carlos Santana in his liner notes labeled “music of the spheres with earth rhythms and overtones of deliciously mad, sensual and spiritual overtones”. He was the first Swedish artist to work with American rap-artists (on the internationally successful album “Don´t Stop” in 1982) and his dub-reggae outfit Universal Riddim included scratch-turntablists alongside tabla-and oud-players, releasing two albums unlike any other reggae music.

Tjernbergs last album “Inside Information” showcased his compositions for a large assembly of Swedens finest jazz musicians, including Bobo Stenson and Bernt Rosengren. On “Music Is My Salvation” – his 12th solo outing – he continues to write in the large format while the expanding the instrumentation into chamber territory with harp, strings and multiple woodwinds. The latter was mostly handled by the brilliant multi-instrumentalist Kjell Westling, who tragically passed away shortly after the recording. Tjernberg calls Westling “one of the music worlds hidden treasures” who among the many instruments he so masterfully played (piano, violin. brass instruments etc:) here shines on saxophones, flutes, clarinets and Spanish lute.

Elias Krantz’s music revolves around asymmetrical melodies, driving rhythms and ambient soundscapes. These elements, when combined, conjure up a strange mix of melancholy and euphoria. A wide range of different instruments co-exist while adhering to the principle, as Einstein once said ”Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler”

Elias’ first album “Island Rock” was released via Airwaves in 2007 to rave reviews.

While listening to his new album you might be reminded of Krautrock legends such as NEU! and Can, as well as modern post-rock in the vein of Tortoise, Four Tet and Caribou, but obviously Elias has a very personal and unique musical language.

He has been working on the follow up over the last two years and the result will be released on Country & Eastern on May 23rd.
The name of the album is Night Ice.

It’s hard to avoid hyperbole in texts like these but this album is indeed a huge step forward from his debut. More collaborations with a wide range of different musicians have allowed more ideas to be explored and developed. The result is an album in which your favorite track changes with every listen. Its brave, dynamic and as pure as they come. An album worthy of the two years spent on it’s details.”
